Thursday I got in my workout. Barely.
It was one of those mornings where one thing after another went wrong.
It was snowing and the kids went crazy thinking there would be no school...thunder woke the littlest one up early and he was cranky....the school bus forgot to stop and pick up my kid...the husband had the minivan didn't answer his phone...
Luckily they were all relatively small things and I still got my workout in.
I had switched the Tuesday and Thursday workouts around earlier in the week when the weather was bad on Tuesday, hoping for better weather later in the week. Boy, was I wrong!!
So I hit the treadmill for what was supposed to be a 7x400 track workout.
4.5 miles total, in about 30 min.
Mile warm up. quarter, quarter, half, quarter, half (-mile), all at 7 min pace with a quarter mile rest between. Then a half mile or so warm down followed by static stretching.
Eh. It was fine and mostly I was happy I finished the workout after how crappy the day started.
Friday is a rest day. So I did a DVD workout that focused on arm strength. I figure I still rested my legs.

First Long Run
Well, my first long run for this training cycle. I did my long run on Sunday morning, around a nearby lake.
8 miles. At about 7:40 pace.
The best part about this long run was I got to run with my husband! With 3 kids we don't often run together. I'm so glad we did this run together. Running by myself I usually feel like I can work out little nagging problems. Running with my husband gives us a chance to go over problems together. And for some reason the problem solving seems to go smooth when we are running.
Monday was an easy 3 mile day.
Tuesday morning I was so confused when my alarm went off--it was still dark out! Turns out, Tuesday was just a really gloomy day.
So I didn't jump out of bed and get in a run. I stayed in bed until a little person woke me up.
Then I keep putting off the run. Finally after lunch and after I put the kids down for a nap I hopped on the treadmill.
Turns out it snowed on Tuesday! Yes, on April 9th it snowed and sleeted and was just icky outside. Add this to the already gloomy start.
So I did a half mile warm up, then 4.5 miles at 7min/mi pace, and another half mile warm down. One of the workouts this week that is supposed to happen on Thursday but I switched Tuesday and Thursday around when I found out I'd have to run on the treadmill.
Whatever, I got in a good, solid run.
Still keeping the mileage down since my calves and plantar are so tight. And I've also been working on remembering to stretch throughout the day and foam roll at night.

fRiday and a homemade mess
Today is a Rest day!
Hooray!
Actually, it's hard for me to take days off. This is especially true in the beginning of a training cycle when I still feel so full of energy. As of last night I hadn't planned on taking the day off. I set out clothes and set my alarm to get up early and do a little yoga at home.
I still got up early today. However, after a full nights sleep I decided it would be better to follow the training plan and truly take a day off.
With all this extra time -and energy- on my hands I decided to try something new in the kitchen.
Homemade Almond Butter
I browsed the web and found the same basic recipe repeated many times over. I choose to follow one off a site I visit quite often since have had success with some of their other recipes.
And threw them into the food processor.
Hooray!

So roasted up 2 cups of almonds
And threw them into the food processor.
I didn't time how long I blended for. At least 15 minutes, but not much more.
And the results....
Well, I'll have to let you know. I did this just after having eaten and I wasn't hungry. I mean I tried a few spoonfuls, but I haven't decided if I'm in love.
Have you ever made your own almond butter? What else do you like to make from scratch? And do you like Rest days?

Homemade Granola and a run
I got in a lovely little 5 miler today. An actual "workout", if you will. My training plan called for a 40 min tempo run. Hmmm. I don't do too many different speeds when I run. So I made it into a "race pace" run. That's pretty much tempo for me. It ended up being only 35 min, and I'm ok with that!
So a half mile warm-up. Went well. Although it was chilly and windy so I wasn't truly warm after this.
4 miles at race pace.
My half marathon goal race pace is 7 min/mile. I was pretty close most of the time. I'll have to check my garmin stats, but overall I was happy. Half way through I really had to push myself to keep up the pace. And this coincided with a hill. But I reminded myself that I haven't done a true workout in months and this is what it feels like to work.
Half mile warm-down.
By the time I finished I was starving since I ran over lunch time. So I quick whipped up a batch of my current fav granola recipe.
It's a clean eating recipe. And you should try it, it's delicious!
Anyway, here are all the dry ingredients, separated so you can see them.
I mixed them up and added oil and maple syrup and mixed some more.
Once out of the oven I put raisins in. I love dried fruit in my granola!
Mix it up with a little Greek yogurt and you've got yourself lunch! Yum!

Starting Again
I'm starting from square one, again.
It's not always a bad thing. Especially since I feel like I've learned something since my last go.
So I'm starting my Half-Marathon training. Or, I have started training. For a new race and with a new goal.
Yesterday, April 1, was day 1 in my 12 week training cycle. And yes, my plantar fasciitis is still nagging at me. But I feel I have better control over it and I know how to manage it this time. No more "go, go, go". That's what I did last time and it sure did make things worse! This time I plan to take it easy and if I need to, back down mileage and intensity. I think taking time to stretch and warm-up and cool-down are more important to me now than logging mileage. Well, more important to my body to keep it running for 30 more years!
So, Monday: easy 3 with the Husband. It was cold and windy! We averaged 7:45min/miles.
Tuesday: 4.5 total miles, with 6 x hill repeats (at an easy pace). Averaged 7:50 pace. It was sunny and 30 degrees, so not as cold!
Hopefully I can catch up on some sleep tonight and I have another easy 3 on tap for tomorrow!

Another cold Sunday in January
It was about 2 degrees F outside this morning when I did my run. And windy and snowing. Luckily I was inside on the treadmill. I really do love my treadmill!
And so I'm happy to report my first 4 training runs have gone smoothly.
8 easy miles this morning. I taped up my foot first. Plantar fasciitis has been flaring up again and the tape really seems to help. That, and the post run ice bath.
After my run I had to hurry and get ready for a birthday party at Micky D's!

Tomorrow is Day 1
Yippee!
Tomorrow is day one of my spring marathon training!
And guess what, it is a REST day. So nothing to be nervous about. Although, I have already laid out morning running clothes, as is my habit. Oh, well.

New Year, 2013
Well it's officially the New Year. Hello 2013.
As I put up new calendars throughout my house I've been thinking a lot about what New Years resolutions I will make for myself. My goals I wish to accomplish for this year. A new mantra for this new year.
And so far I have come up with two:
Perspective
and
Inspiration.
I hope to keep a fresh perspective on life. A positive outlook. A realistic and telescoping view of the world around me. I want to remember that life is about the big things and life is about the little things. But even my life is not all about me.
Inspiration goes two ways for me. I want to remember what inspires me everyday in the things I do. Am I inspired by a marathon goal to get up early in the morning and run? Or am I inspired by a friend's healthy habit to make better food choices? I often feel inspired by my parents to make the choice that will help my children in the long run, even if it is not an easy step to take today.
I would also like to be an inspiration to others. Not sure how to go about this or how to realize I've met such a goal. But I do feel like I inspire my daughter, as I have found out she talks a lot about me when she's at school. Good things. Things that I have already forgotten about, she thinks they are important enough to tell other people. And this makes me think that if I can be an inspiration to her maybe I could inspire other people, too.
